Sandy Wilson’s captivating pastiche of 1920s musical comedy The Boy Friend enjoyed world-wide success. In our opinion, his score for Divorce Me Darling (1965) is very much better, and this fine Decca original cast recording here makes its first appearance on CD in remastered sound. Ten years after The Boy Friend, Wilson decided to update his story, following his characters into the 1930s. The songs are among the best that Wilson ever wrote. His characters bear striking resemblances to Noel Coward, Gertrude Lawrence, Marlene Dietrich, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers as they launch into one of the snappiest of 1960s scores. The sound quality perfectly captures the atmosphere and theatrical dimension, not least when Anna Sharkey brings the house down with a storming conga.
